Best Beaches in Cambodia

Positioned between two of the most popular countries to opt for when looking for amazing beaches – Thailand’s beach islands and Vietnam’s long coastline – Cambodia might not be the first place to think of when considering beach holidays. However, even though there’s only a small coast along the South of the country, you can still find some pretty amazing beaches here too.

The good news is that the capital Phrom Peng is actually quite close to the coastline of Vietnam. This means that for many people visiting, it can be pretty easy to get out of the city and find a nice beach along the seaside. But where should you start when trying to find somewhere nice in Cambodia? Well, here are a few of the best beaches you’ll want to visit.

Best Beaches in Cambodia

But there’s much more to this island than just partying. In fact, Long Beach in Koh Rong is not only considered one of the best beaches in Cambodia, but also one of the best beaches in the world too. Also referred to as Sok San beach, this is a slice of paradise away from the main beaches on the island.

It’s very easy to get to Long Beach, and the easiest way to get here is via boat. There are even some accommodation options just off of the beach itself, and you’ll definitely want to consider staying a few nights. This is definitely one of the top Cambodian beaches and if you want to see the best of Koh Rong, then stopping here is a must.

Coral Beach, Koh Ta Kiev

It’s located on the quiet Koh Ka Tiev, which is the best choice if you want to get away from expensive resorts and hotels. The only place to stay on this island is in local houses and bungalows, which gives it a lot of charm and character.

This place isn’t filled with 7/11’s and convenience stores, and you’ll be pretty lucky to get a good phone signal – but this will be perfect for some. The beautiful blue water and clean white beaches are virtually untouched, and there are some excellent places to grab something to eat here too.

For many people, a quiet location with an amazing beach is all that they’re looking for. And if you’re one of these people, then visiting Koh Ta Kiew for a week or two might be exactly what you need. It’s a welcome break not only from everyday life, but also from the upscale hotels and expensive resorts that many beaches have nowadays.

Kep beach

Much of the attraction to Kep is in the small town area that’s nearby to the beach, which is quite endearing and friendly. There are good restaurants here to choose from as well, which includes some of the best crab and seafood dishes in the whole of Cambodia.

Generally, the beach itself is kept pretty clean – the is mainly because a lot of locals use the beach themselves too. Plus, this is more of a family beach than anything else, with many local parents taking their kids to enjoy the sea and sand.

Independence Beach

Another beach that’s located on the mainland of Cambodia is called Independence beach. It’s located within Sihanoukville, which has long been one of the most popular tourist spots in Cambodia.

This is a relaxed and beautiful beach, though it can get extremely busy, especially over the last few years where more and more foreigners are moving into the area. There are some amazing restaurants in the area, and there is plenty of room along the beachfront too. It also has a nice pier that you can walk along if you don’t want to get wet in the sea.

update: it’s worth noting that a few people have mentioned that currently this beach is n’tup to scratch, and apparently it’s very unclean. Although this wasn’t the case a few years ago, do your research before planning a visit here.

Sner Beach

As well as the Cardamom mountains and Botum Sakor national park, another place worth visiting in the Koh Kong region is Sner beach. It’s a little over 15km outside of Koh Kong town, and it’s definitely more than worth the journey.

This is a real locals beach, with many of the Cambodians in the area bringing their kids here. It’s a great place to visit for families, and although there’s not a ton of activities for you to enjoy here, you can definitely find something to do. It’s a good place to get away from tourists, as many of them don’t visit this part of the country.

Whilst you’re here, it’s a wise idea to pick up some seafood on the beach too, with there being a few different options for barbecued shrimp. Make sure that you stop by Sner beach if you’re in Koh Kong.

Conclusion

Just because somewhere isn’t known for their beaches, doesn’t mean that you should try and explore them. Whilst the amazing temples rightly make up most of the touristic interest in the country, if you’re near the South coast then it definitely makes sense to pay a visit to some of these amazing beaches. This is especially true if you can afford to stay over on some of the islands here overnight, as they truly are some of the best in the whole of Asia.
